Let Go of Who You Are

Updated: Dec 31, 2020

So many people have trouble changing their lives. It feels like a constant, upward battle. No matter what plan they follow or what New Year’s resolution they select, they always end up giving up, failing, or falling away from their original intent. There are many reasons why this happens, but the primary one is this:

Your ability to change is limited by what you believe.

You cannot change something that you don’t believe you can change. Beliefs are like computer programs. They run in the background of your life determining what can and cannot be done. You may want to do something with your life, but if your background program forbids it, you simply won’t be able to. It doesn’t matter how hard you try.

Even more insidious, you may not actually know what you believe. Many beliefs are created in childhood through small circumstances that slowly build up a worldview that is as inflexible as it is invisible. These programs quietly run your life while you consciously think you are in control.

Here are some beliefs that may run more on the surface and are easier to identify.

Microphone
  • I’m petrified of public speaking.

  • I'm allergic to ______.

  • Sugar gives you cancer.

  • Spiders are terrifying.

  • I have claustrophobia.

These surface programs are easily identifiable and you are probably aware of how they influence your life and actions.

Here are some others that are harder to identify because they run so quietly in the background.

  • I’m not enough.

  • I’m terrible with money.

  • My family is not dependable.

  • I deserve the bad stuff that happens to me.

  • Rich people are not happy.

  • I will be on medication for the rest of my life.

  • This will never heal.

On the surface most of us would deny having beliefs such as these, but you would be surprised at how many of us walk around with these background programs running our lives.

For example: An entrepreneur is trying desperately to be successful. Every time he comes close to a big break, he messes something up and ruins his opportunity. On the surface, he has bad luck. Underneath, it is his underlying programming that won’t let him find success so it causes him to self-destruct. His program might be, “I’m terrible with money.” Or maybe, “I don’t have what it takes to do this.” Even, “Rich people are not happy” could be derailing him. Until the underlying programs are deleted, this entrepreneur may never find his big break.

Here is another example: A woman wants to leave her job and start a nonprofit that helps a cause she is dedicated to. Every time she makes plans to do it, though, some crisis comes up to stop her. Her underlying programs could be, “I’m not enough,” or “I’m scared of public speaking (and would need to do that to make this dream happen),” or “My family will not support my risky choices.” Any of these programs could be enough to keep her dream from being realized.

So as you can see, your ability to change is limited by what you believe, whether you know you believe it or not! If you subconsciously believe you are not lovable, you will not be able to attract relationships that love you unconditionally for who you are. If you don’t believe you will ever be healed of some physical problem, it will very likely never heal. Our underlying programming is so strong that it will create a physical reality to fit those beliefs rather than allow the physical reality to modify those beliefs.

So what are we to do about this?

In my blog post Are You Stuck? we talk about several categories of energy. Limiting beliefs are often mental or spiritual beliefs that are so strong they develop their own core of energy. Some people have learned to successfully identify and delete these limiting beliefs through coaching, counseling, and therapy programs. Having someone else look at your life and identify your limiting beliefs can be enormously valuable. Energy work can also clear these limiting beliefs by first locating the belief on the energy level and removing that core of energy. Then on the conscious level you can easily delete the belief because it no longer has energy to push back. My two favorite techniques to use to work with limiting beliefs are Integrated Energy Therapy® and Emotional Freedom Technique.

Integrated Energy Therapy® IET® works to clear out limiting beliefs from cellular memory that is keeping you from moving forward. Part of the process is installing empowering energy that allows you to create new beliefs to support your goals. What is really exciting about IET® is that you don’t necessarily have to know what all those subconscious programs are. IET® can clear out the energy behind beliefs allowing you to change them easily. In the blog post Get Unstuck with IET, I go deeper into IET® and tell you my experience with it.

Emotional Freedom Technique

EFT works with tapping points on your body (similar to acupressure points) to acknowledge limiting beliefs, clear them, and install new beliefs. The trick with this technique is that you have to know what your limiting beliefs are in order to clear them. It is possible to learn the technique and use it on your own. Doing it with a practitioner gives you that added benefit of an outside eye that can help you identify your limiting beliefs. Learn more about this exciting technique by reading Emotional Freedom Technique and download a PDF to help you get started!

When I let go of who I am, I become who I might be. Lao-Tzu

The work of IET® and EFT can be described by this quote by Lao-Tzu, “When I let go of who I am, I become who I might be.” You need to be able to see yourself and your limiting beliefs. You need to be willing and able to let them go. Only then can you become who you want to be. Your underlying programs and beliefs make you who you are. However, it is likely that they will not allow you to become who you want to be. You can love yourself for who you are now but also be willing to grow into someone different. If you really want to realize your potential in this life, you will need to face your underlying beliefs and remove them to make way for empowering beliefs that will carry you forward.

So where can you start? First, identify one of your limiting beliefs and work on removing it. You may know one already. If not, I have created a free 14 minute guided Limiting Belief Meditation that will help you get started. There is no background music, so put on your favorite chill sounds, find a comfortable place to sit, and meditate your way to some answers!

If you want to talk about how energy work can help you overcome your limiting beliefs, Contact Me. I can do full energy sessions with IET® as well as EFT coaching sessions to help you identify and remove some of your subconscious programs.
