Floods, fires, and storms. Wars. Sexual abuse. Racial injustice. Economic disparity. Pollution. Political partisanship. Terrorism. Underfunded schools. Animal and plant extinction. Coronavirus. Rainforest destruction…
You get it. Our world is messed up. Anywhere you look you see the results of what does to us. As people, as societies, as an ecological whole we are riding on a sinking ship.
There are a lot of people bailing hard to keep us from going down completely. They are out there trying to make big things happen to save us all. They are teaching our kids to change the world. We want to do the same but some days, it's just hard to get out of bed and make sure everyone in your house gets through another day. Sometimes a hurricane or wildfire hits and all you can do is try to survive. Is it really realistic to think of changing the world at this time?
Fortunately, you aren’t expected to change the world today.
Nope. There is no way you can, so stop putting pressure on yourself.
All you can do today, all you need to do today is start to change yourself.
Start to let go of your fear. Start to find your joy. Start to dream of the person you want to be. Start to clean out your house. Start to deal with your emotional baggage. Start to acknowledge racism. Start to speak more kindly to those around you. Start to see things from someone else’s point of view. Start to forgive. Start to ask for forgiveness. Start being the person you want to become. Start being the kind of person who might change the world.
That’s it. That’s all you can do. Pick one thing you need to do and just start. That is the first and only thing required of you right right now.
Imagine it. If you worked on your stuff and I worked on my stuff and everyone else worked on their stuff...how long would it take before we’d see change around us?
You know those people who are out there working to change the world? They started by working on their own stuff. That’s all they did. They took one step and then another. And now look at what they are doing. Do you know what is keeping them from fixing all the problems on earth? The rest of us who haven’t started to work on our stuff. Because even 100 people changing the world is not enough. It is going to need every single one of us to make this happen. Every single one of us needs to step up and start our own healing.
So, to change the world, start with yourself. Healing your own stuff is the first, the only, the absolutely best thing you can do to start changing the world. Healing yourself gives the people around you permission to heal theirs. Finding your joy gives the people around you permission to find theirs. Releasing your fears gives the people around you permission to release theirs. Acknowledging your problems and starting t work on them gives others permission to acknowledge theirs.
You can’t worry about if your spouse is ready or if your family will think it is weird or if your friends have other priorities. If you want to change the world, you have to start with yourself. You have to start today.
How do you start?
Clean out a drawer. Write a list of people you want to forgive. Eat something healthy. Face a fear. Take a moment to do something joyful. Release that old grudge. Pick something. Make a commitment to do it (don’t just think about it) today to start to transform into someone who might be able to change the world. Learn to be who you are supposed to be. Break free from your fear and your past holding you back. We need you to heal yourself. We need you to be you. The best version of you living out the life that you were meant to live at this time. That’s the only thing that will heal the world.
